Why We Age and Why We Don’t Have To

Why We Age and Why We Don’t Have To

Is the subtitle of Lifespan, a book written by David A. Sinclair, PhD, and published by ATRIA BOOKS in 2019. While my weekly blogs are focused on Conservative, Preservative and Restorative measures for osteoarthritis, what if aging itself is a disease and that disease is treatable, maybe even preventable?

Warning and disclaimer: this blog is introducing the reader to the new world of Senolytics. I became interested when a patient in his mid-80s presented with tendinitis in proximity to his knee; but when his X-rays were compatible with the joints of an adolescent, I had to ask him his secret to not having arthritis? His response was to hand me a copy of Lifespan. Here is the patient offering to treat me.

Then he told me about his personal experience with senolytic drugs dasatinib and quercetin for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He learned about them from the Mayo Clinic Clinical Trial. Reader, before you rush out to the pharmacy, be aware that this Mayo Clinic Trial with a senolytic drug series seems to have been tested on only a small number of patients. My opinion is that it will take a 1000 patient randomized level 1 study with 10-year follow-up before we will know the truth about senolytic benefits if any. My caution is based on the August, 2020, blow to the anti-aging field when Unity BioTechnology failed its first major study on knee arthritis and cut this lead program. For your information, Jeff Bezos had committed a large amount of financial support to that study as had the Mayo Clinic.

How to Prevent Aging

So, what might you do that is safe and proven to keep you healthy, fit and delay aging? According to research for the fountain of youth-Senolytics, High-Intensity Interval Training may be the best approach to improving health and fitness. Not only for the young and healthy, but HIIT works for just about everyone with even bigger benefits for older adults. The concept of HIIT is fairly simple; during the workout, you can do anything for 30 second to several minutes until you become breathless. Now catch your breath and repeat the activity. During this High – Intensity Interval Training, you alternate between exerting a high and low level of exercise. Researchers have found age-related muscle deterioration can be reversed. HIIT seems to change a cell’s DNA that boosts its ability to produce energy. It also triggers the growth of new muscle, helping counteract inevitable muscle loss that comes with aging.

If your joint symptoms and motion restrictions are keeping you from a fitness routine or a recreational pursuit, make an appointment, and after the consultation, I will advance informed consent about treatment options.
