Dear Mitchell B Sheinkop, MD, FAAOS,
On behalf of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Board of Directors, I am pleased to officially announce the Academy’s strategic investment in the field of biologics.
As the world’s largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists, we have a responsibility to advance the quality of orthopaedic care in a fully transparent and scientific way. We also look to work with similarly focused organizations on these efforts. It comes at a crucial time when patients, surgeons and other healthcare specialists are navigating the field independently without reliable sources of information. Now is the time for AAOS to lead the way!
Over the next five years and in line with goal #2 of our Strategic Plan related to quality and value, we will identify and build on the gaps within the biologics field, addressing concerns stemming from misinformation of direct-to-consumer advertising of biologic treatments to patients. Our efforts will help separate fact from fiction by delivering evidence-based content specifically related to growth in biologics knowledge and its application to orthopaedic treatment and care.
Key activities will include symposia, evidence-based systematic reviews, white paper and consensus statement development and dissemination, and education content production. Among our immediate action items is the launch of an AAOS biologics web presence and a supporting article in AAOS Now.
We welcome your input as the Academy develops a unified voice in the musculoskeletal biologics field and advocates for the responsible use of biologics in clinical practice.”
With the publication of this announcement when coupled with the intent of the FDA to enforce the ruled and regulations governing the discipline of Regenerative Medicine, we may look forward with confidence to integrity and scientific oversite in Cellular Orthopedics and related biologic interventions. I have anticipated the future practicing Evidence Based Medicine for my entire professional career be it as a joint replacement specialist or for the last nine years as a Cellular Orthopedic specialist. My several recent Cellular Orthopedic publications in medical journals bear witness as does the invitation received earlier this week to speak this June, at TOBI, the largest Regenerative Medicine meeting of the year attended by both an American and international audience of practicing physicians.
