I turned on the radio this morning and the weather report from the Hippy-Dippy Weather Man “ the temperature at O’Hare is minus 4 degrees, the wind chill is minus 25 degrees”. Then came the news “all Chicago Public Schools are closed due to the risk of frostbite” After a car short ride, I turned on my computer at the office and there was an e-mail blast from the Active Transportation Alliance concerning early registration” Car-Free summer biking starts now” reminding me of the annual Sunday May 26, Bike The Drive event in Chicago. From 6am until noon, participants will be able to bike the Outer Drive, one of the most scenic boulevards in the world without worrying about motor vehicle traffic.

How will Midwesterners survive this winter and make it through another Polar Vortex? They will visualize and fantasize. It can’t be by bread alone and just as I look at Conde Nast Traveler and Trout Magazines, read a book, or go to the movies with my wife; I will visualize and fantasize about biking the drive or biking and fly fishing in Southwest Wisconsin. I write about preparing for the ski season usually in early October so I thought it was time with eight inches fresh snow on the ground and a temperature below zero to start preparing for the spring biking season. I have never enjoyed cycling in the winter even though for 35 years, I used cycling recreation as my form of transportation back and forth to the hospital interspersed with jogging. I didn’t use a car other than the winter months; and even then it was mostly public transportation.

While a good part of the news yesterday was focused on the Super Bowl next week, I was at the gym, indoor biking and taking in a basketball game. I am totally opposed to any diversions while biking out doors, but indoor cycling goes a lot faster when accompanied by news or sports. Now is the time to plan ahead for cycling this spring, summer and fall. It is a great time to upgrade your equipment; in February, deals are to be had at your local bike shop. In addition to the fun and scenery afforded, cycling will help remove the weight you gain over a holiday season. Readers beware, ten pounds may not only result in an increased blood pressure and bring on type 2 Diabetes, and the latest science suggests that the staggering growth in the occurrence of gout is associated with that Metabolic Syndrome.

Dr Sheinkop, “my arthritis and knee pain have progressed to a point that I no longer enjoy cycling or mechanically, I can’t bend my knee enough to cause a revolution of the pedal.” My response “ time to loose weight, get fit and be evaluated for a stem cell intervention.” That Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate Cellular Medicine treatment protocol will relieve pain, improve motion, enhance quality of life and alter the arthritic process. It need not be fantasy, start visualizing that Bike the Drive today. With a Knee Replacement, it isn’t going to happen.
